Key technologies are key to further development in a specific technology sector. They are the subject of scientific research. They are studied thoroughly enough to find practical applications, but not to the point where all their potential applications can be fully exploited. Examples of key technologies contain bioinformatics, image recognition and robotics, as well as solar energy and hybrid technologies.
Advanced technologies are not yet ready for use but represent something more than a mere vision of the future. They already have practical applications and can be further developed to become key technologies. Advanced technologies are often associated with very risky investments. Examples of these technologies are neurocomputing, genetic engineering, and nanotechnology.
New technologies that are still in the research phase are called technologies of the future.
Key developments and technologies that set the pace of the future are called new technologies. They are essential for the future development of society and the competitiveness of businesses.
